4 DIY skincare combinations you should never try at home

Beauty hack or skin disaster?
The internet can provide solutions to almost any beauty issue, as people are seen using lemon for hyperpigmentation, baking soda for exfoliation, toothpaste for acne, and even almost any essential oil for any problem. However, just because two ingredients are currently sitting quietly in your kitchen cabinets does not imply that they belong there when it comes to skin. Here are 5 skincare DIY combinations that one should refrain from trying on the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) specifically cautions against several popular DIY beauty trends and recommends evidence-based skincare instead.https://www.aad.org/public/diseases/acne/diy/adult-acne-treatment

Lemon juice and baking soda
This combination has to top the list, and people blindly try it on their face and body, thinking that it will help lighten the pigmentation on their skin. The reasoning seems valid, as lemon is an acidic fruit that has vitamin C, while baking soda is an alkaline and slightly gritty substance, making it perfect for exfoliation. But the issue is that this combination is ‘strong’ in nature, with different chemical properties that can result in burning and stinging sensations, redness, dryness, and skin peeling too.

Toothpaste and lemon juice
This is a typical social media rumour that is frequently used as a treatment for acne or dark spots. The combination of toothpaste with lemon juice on a dry pimple can make things worse for you. Toothpaste can contain substances like abrasives, peroxides, flavouring agents, and other ‘ingredients’ that are not meant to work on facial skin and might irritate it. Adding lemon juice to it only increases the possibility of irritation.

Apple cider vinegar and lemon juice
If one acidic component creates even skin tone, two must do it better. This is completely a myth. Apple cider vinegar and lemon are both acids, and sometimes home remedies combine them into their toners for skin work. One needs to understand that the skin already has a naturally acidic environment. However, that does not mean that all acidic items that can be found at home have to be beneficial when applied externally.

Baking soda and toothpaste
This combination is usually advertised as a home remedy for blackhead removal, skin whitening, or ‘deep cleaning’ of pores. However, scrubbing is not the same as unclogging pores. Using more baking soda will result in a harsher combination, and overly harsh home remedies could hurt the skin instead of helping. You may experience tightness, dryness, and redness, and skin peeling as well
