Bob Mackie, fashion trailblazer, dies at 87

Bob Mackie doesn’t typically design everyday clothes. Instead, he was good at creating awe-inspiring outfits

Many celebrities, including Cher, Diana Ross, and Carol Burnett, wore his designs, and those dresses have become timeless

Now, he is dead at the age of 87

The post on his official Instagram account announced his death: “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today.”

“He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a fashion and costume designer, which is all he ever wanted to do.”

“His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world, the statement added

His cause of death is cited as pneumonia, according to a fashion designer representative

With Mackie designing outfits for so many celebrities, his relationship, particularly with Cher, was significant

His collaboration with the musician over the years became pivotal and a moment of awe in the fashion world

Mackie previously told People how he and Cher ended old ideas and broke new ground in the industry

“Nobody was allowed even to design a halter dress until Cher started wearing them on Sonny & Cher [in the ‘70s], and then all of a sudden they were in everybody’s collection,” he said

“And then girls were showing way more skin than they should have, because Cher was showing more skin than she should have. But she looked good in it.”

Mackie, meanwhile, has left behind his ex-wife, Lulu Porter; granddaughter, Alysa Townsend; and his great-granddaughters, Kyla and Keira Townsend
