The remarkable life of legendary Italian designer Giorgio Armani is officially heading to the small screen, with a prestige television series now in development through Fremantle owned Lux Vide in collaboration with the Giorgio Armani fashion house

Announced on July 30, the untitled biographical drama will chronicle Armani’s journey from a young man in northern Italy to one of the most influential designers in fashion history. The production is being developed for an international audience and has secured the support of the Armani fashion house, which is providing access to its archives, iconic creations and historic locations to help bring the story to life with authenticity.

Acclaimed filmmaker Ferzan Ozpetek has signed on to direct the series. Ozpetek, who knew Armani personally over many years, is also co writing the screenplay alongside Lux Vide head writer Francesco Arlanch. The pair are keeping plot details under wraps, although the project is expected to explore both Armani’s professional achievements and the personal experiences that shaped his career

Speaking about the project, Ozpetek described Armani as a visionary artist whose interests stretched well beyond fashion. He recalled conversations with the designer about cinema, architecture, art and life, saying he admired Armani’s determination as much as his creativity. The director added that telling Armani’s story is both an honour and a significant artistic challenge because of the designer’s complex and captivating personality.

Armani transformed global fashion after launching his own label with business partner Sergio Galeotti during the 1970s. The pair famously sold their Volkswagen to help finance the company’s beginnings before introducing both menswear and womenswear collections. Armani soon became known for his softly tailored jackets, relaxed silhouettes and elegant approach to luxury, creating a signature aesthetic that reshaped modern fashion.

His influence quickly extended into Hollywood. Armani designed the memorable wardrobe worn by Richard Gere in American Gigolo, a film widely credited with introducing his distinctive tailoring to international audiences. Throughout the following decades, he dressed countless actors and actresses for both films and major awards ceremonies, including Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Michelle Yeoh, Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Robert De Niro, Russell Crowe and Tom Cruise. His work ultimately appeared in costumes for more than 200 films, cementing his place within both the fashion and entertainment industries.

Armani died on September 4, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a fashion empire he had fully owned and built into one of Italy’s most recognisable luxury brands. Despite his worldwide fame, he remained famously private throughout his life, rarely discussing personal matters publicly

Lux Vide founder and president Matilde Bernabei said the company had pursued the opportunity to tell Armani’s story for years, describing him as a symbol of Italian excellence who rewrote the rules of elegance and style. She also revealed that international buyers have already shown strong interest in the series, reflecting the enduring global appeal of Armani’s legacy
