Glass skin vs healthy skin: Are viral skincare trends damaging the skin barrier?

Are viral skincare trends sabotaging your skin barrier?
The glass skin trend, defined as the appearance of skin that is dewy and glassy, has taken the social media world by storm. Beauty gurus have presented many multi-step regimens, adopting different exfoliation techniques and using serums and face masks to achieve the glass skin look. Even though skincare has its merits in attaining beautiful skin, overuse and representation of trends might not guarantee the desired effect.

Glass skin is trending, but is your skin barrier paying the price?
For better understanding, we approached Dr Chandani Jain Gupta, MBBS & MD, Dermatologist & Aesthetic Physician, Elantis Healthcare, New Delhi, who explained, “The skin barrier acts as a shield for your skin, protecting your body from outside pollutants, irritants, and bacteria while retaining moisture necessary for healthy skin. The skin barrier should work properly to ensure the healthy state of the skin; however, exfoliation, the trick of combining active ingredients in face creams, using different products, or misusing active substances can weaken the skin barrier, thus making it unusable.”

The truth about glass skin and your skin barrier
The usage of many products at the same time is one of the common mistakes made by people in pursuit of glass skin. The process of layering numerous serums, frequent scrubbing, and trying out new ingredients can be too much stress for the skin, especially for people who suffer from sensitive or acne-prone skin. The symptoms of damaged skin include redness, dryness, violations of skin integrity, itching, burning sensation, and hypersensitivity to cosmetic agents that had been tolerated well before. The feeling of tightness of the skin after washing is also characteristic; the skin not only looks shiny but also feels tight.

Your skin doesn’t need to look like glass to be healthy
Furthermore, people are also mistaken in thinking that healthy skin has to be completely smooth with no pores or visible imperfections. In fact, the presence of pores, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and the occasional breakout is quite normal for human skin. The effects of glass skin can vary due to different factors, including lighting, makeup, and social media filters. As a result, one cannot compare his or her skin to the pictures and videos with enhanced effects; otherwise, they will have unreasonable expectations when it comes to their own skin.

Is glass skin worth the hype?
Having and keeping your skin healthy isn’t complicated. A gentle cleanser, the right moisturiser, and sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 are all you need for your daily skincare routine. Active skincare ingredients should be introduced to the skin at a slow pace, preferably one at a time to avoid irritation and to test how the skin responds to them. In addition, you should stay away from rough exfoliators, overwashing your face, and using too many products.

Bottom line
If your skin gets red, burns, peels, or becomes too sensitive, you should stop using irritating products and consult a dermatologist. The goal of every skincare routine should be to keep the skin in a good condition, allowing it to stay healthy, hydrated, and comfortable, rather than looking beautiful on social media
