Harshvardhan Rane stepped into a new chapter of men’s jewellery with Senco Gold & Diamonds, as the actor went on to unveil the brand’s latest collection, Ti22 by Aham, which combines titanium with gold and diamonds. Launched at One8 Commune in Juhu, Mumbai, the event was also graced by Senco Gold & Diamonds’ Managing Director and CEO Suvankar Sen along with Director and Head of Marketing & Design Joita Sen, among others.

For the unveiling, Rane was seen sporting an all-black look along with a titanium bracelet and pendant, which complemented the line’s ‘Be Bold. Be Strong’ philosophy. Ti22 by Aham is the brand’s attempt to redefine men’s jewellery as something that is more personal, and yet doesn’t restrict one’s fashion appeal

We got talking to Harshvardhan post the launch about his association with the brand and the collection, how his personal styling has evolved in terms of jewellery, and more

Ask Harshvardhan what about this campaign’s combination of titanium, gold and diamonds made him want to be a part of it, and he explains how he sees it as basic as how we become friends with someone. He said, “We look for common traits and qualities. When I read about their philosophies, I found some keywords like strong, quiet confidence. Then I read about the fact that they’re using titanium, so I did a deeper dive and found out that titanium takes double the amount of heat to melt. Well, it resonated with me – I don’t like to melt under pressure and heat.”

“And also the fact that when people talk to me about my career, they always associate me with romantic films only. So, similarly, I don’t feel that jewellery should be associated only with weddings and ceremonial functions. I feel if somebody could crack something like this, which could be worn to the office or anywhere – going out, casual dinner, not just very glitzy and glamorous functions, basically. So, any kind of event, if you’re comfortable wearing something, I find that philosophy very comfortable. I feel it does not belong to only one stereotype. I’ll put my phone away because the questions are yours.”

The campaign talks about quiet confidence, something that did catch Harshvardhan’s attention. Ask him what that means to him, and he tells us, “I’ve always believed that if confidence is not quiet, it’s not confidence. If it has to be loud, it is not confidence. It is something else. It is overcompensation for something else. So, I really pray to whoever the higher entity is that it gives me whatever is genuine and real. Don’t give me anything loud.

I feel the same is followed by these guys. And to look at jewellery which is not loud, it is something very refreshing for me. Maybe it has happened because they have infused traditional gold and diamond with titanium, which is a very futuristic metal used for aircraft and space work. So, it is something never seen before. They are pioneers, and they are doing something new.”

He also highlighted how something similar is happening with his world too. He said, “In my career, I am doing Force 3, Daya Nayak, Silla. I am not moving away from romance but I am trying to do something more for the audience. So, doing something more for the audience is something which I really enjoy as a process.”

Men’s jewellery and accessories have obviously evolved over the years, and it is visible in the way everyone styles them now. We asked Harshvardhan how has his relationship with jewellery and accessories has changed, especially as someone who is also in the creative field and gets to experiment more often, and he had a rather interesting answer to it

He says, “I always feel men have a fascination with touching metal, or they have a fascination with metal touching their body at all times. It could be a gun, for example. The first thing they pick up is a gun. I don’t know what fascination it is. In Diwali, we used to buy this iron gun; it may have something to do with that. I can’t define this. Men like these big 4×4 vehicles, which are hardcore metal. I don’t know why they put it in a box. They put the whole concept of gender in this. I feel that, from the times of Gladiator, they wear such huge chunks of metal; that’s their jewellery. So, you define your jewellery.”

He added, “A farmer’s jewellery would be the things which he uses in the field. So, it is metal, right? It is tough. And these metals stay with him, and they have fond memories with it. So, men build fond memories with things that stay with them. And it is mostly metal.”

We can’t talk to Harshvardhan and not talk about style, isn’t it? As someone whose approach to style has always been understated, we also asked him what makes him go ‘this is me’ when he picks a ring or a bracelet or anything jewellery, and he says, “I don’t like to make it absolutely subtle, because I am in this field, right? So, I don’t want to be dishonest about where I am. Ican’t be completely matte. If you notice (the ring he is wearing), it is completely matte, but there is this right amount of bling, shine, and glamour infused into it. It is really amazing how they have balanced it so well.”

He added, “I relate to a piece of jewellery when it is not on one extreme. There is a scale, and on one extreme, there is glamour, and on the other extreme, it is very subtle. I feel there is a sweet spot between these two extremes.”

We also asked him which piece from the collection he would consider adding to his wardrobe, and he thinks that the rings would definitely find a place. He added, “I am not worried about it getting scratched and damaged because it is a really tough metal used for aircraft, so it doesn’t have anything on me. It is that little piece of, you know, jewellery which is there but not there, and you don’t have to wear clothes around it.”

He adds, “It is just that they have cracked something which doesn’t need a lot of support. It can be worn just with a jacket and denim.”

Since the campaign is trying to redefine masculinity, we also asked him what that one traditional idea about masculinity that he thinks men should let go of is, and his answer will most definitely crack everyone up. He immediately said, “Not taking showers – I don’t know why that has to prove masculinity, because you can be masculine while taking a shower also.”

Talking a little about work and life, we asked Harshvardhan what he is more focused on proving to himself rather than the industry, at this stage in his career

He says, “I think one thing which I am proving to myself is that I really don’t know what’s happening with the other person. The more I study about psychology, I realise that what’s going on in someone’s mind, in their life, it’s almost impossible for me to understand just by looking at them. That kind of judgement which we are taught initially to survive is something I think is going far away from me. The more I study, the more I am proving to myself that I don’t know anything. So, that is something which is really playing on my mind lately.”

Lastly, we also got talking about his work, and asked him what’s happening on the work front. He revealed just finishing Force 3, and added, “I am excited about. Sila, directed by Umang Kumar. Force 3 is action on a larger scale. Sila is romance and action. And there’s Daya Nayak (Police Company) for Ram Gopal Varma, so I don’t need to say anything else. I am very excited about this phase of my life.”
