horsegiirL has officially fled the farm. The half-human, half-horse hybrid, also known as Stella Stallion, released her debut album NATURE IS HEALING in June, played her first Lollapalooza set in August, and is embarking on a month-long tour this September. Known for her frenzied, spiritual DJ sets, the elusive performer—never seen without her signature horse mask—has quickly evolved from performances on the farm for her animal friends to an opening slot for Robyn at the Kia Forum. Yet despite the madness of her hardcore, genre-bending sets, the fierce German artist has decided to embrace an era of personal growth and connection to Mother Earth. Which is why her recent project gallops from karma to fungi to aura, aiming to guide listeners towards a deeper understanding of the planet we live on. So what’s the backbone holding Stella Stallion—mane and all—together? A structured beauty routine, of course. We called up the mysterious creative to talk her favorite products, hard-posting on Instagram, and what part of her look is simply good equine genetics.

BRENDAN KENNEDY:It’s so nice to meet you

HORSEGIIRL:Nice to meet you, Brendan. How are you?

KENNEDY:I’m good. Where are you right now?

HORSEGIIRL:I’m in Berlin, actually at a shoot

KENNEDY:So how do you feel after playing your first Lollapalooza?

HORSEGIIRL:Feeling good. I think it really went well. I was definitely very unsure if the new hybrid show is going to land with the farmies. And now I feel a lot more calm knowing that they loved it. I had a good time as well

KENNEDY:It looked amazing. How does being on stage make you feel?

HORSEGIIRL:It really depends on the stage, but I would say a lot of the time it makes me feel alive. And it makes me feel connected to my audience because a lot of the times [it feels like] you release music into the ether. And even Instagram or TikTok followers, they’re just kind of these ineffable, incomprehensible numbers. And when I’m on stage, I actually feel like, wow, this is a real moment and my music actually reaches people. So it always feels very nice and rewarding.

KENNEDY:For sure. Well, I wanted to thank you for being the first horse featured for Face Card. Are there some days that you feel more horse than human or more human than horse?

HORSEGIIRL:Sometimes I feel more horse than human, and then sometimes I feel more human than horse. I’ve been feeling a lot more human than horse for a long time when it came to touring really heavily and being in the city. And I think now, I’m returning to my horse self a bit more

KENNEDY:Love to hear it. I want you to walk me through a day in the life of Stella. What do you do in the morning?

HORSEGIIRL:No day is the same, but in the morning I try to have a bit of a routine going. I wake up and stretch a little bit, but nothing crazy. And then I try to just put on a song that I like. I really, really, really try to have no social media for the first hour of my day. That doesn’t always work, but when it does it definitely helps my mental health. Then, I eat something within the first hour. I really have been getting quite good at that because I used to not. And that was not healthy.

KENNEDY:Do you have a daily skincare routine that you like to stick to?

HORSEGIIRL:Yeah, I’m very structured with my skincare routine. I even have a little note on my mirror where I wrote down what days are my retinol days and what days I use that sali… acidic, kind of thing—I always struggle saying that word. [Laughs] Just so I don’t get it mixed up. But yeah, that’s how I’m having this glowy skin. It takes a lot of work

KENNEDY:Is that the only product you like to use for your skincare in the morning?

HORSEGIIRL:In the mornings, I oil cleanse and then wash my face with either a gentle foaming gel cleanser or a—let me just look up how you actually say that. Salicylic—is that how you say it? Salicylic acid. That thing. And then I put on my ceramide Korean skin cream, moisturizer, and SPF. Yeah, that’s really it. Sometimes I use a rice toner, but I think I just only use that because it smells good and not really because it’s doing much.

KENNEDY:I love that you mentioned scents. I actually wanted to ask you what your favorite scent was

HORSEGIIRL:I don’t want to gatekeep, but I do want to gatekeep. I have a lot of perfumes. I love smelling good. And when my friends are out and they forget a perfume, I’m the gatekeeper. I don’t really like sharing my perfumes on a night out because I chose this smell and I want to smell like this. [Laughs] But one of my favorite smells of all time is Le Passant by ORMAIE. It’s a small perfumery from France. In summer, I really like the Comme des Garçons sunscreen smell—it’s really light and very summery. And I used to be obsessed with the Diptyque Bohème scent when I was younger.

KENNEDY:I hate sharing scents too. I feel like they should just be strictly for me

HORSEGIIRL:I’m happy if we’re getting ready at my house and you don’t have a perfume, you can choose any of my perfumes that I’m not going to wear that night. That is fine. But I don’t want to be twinning with someone that night. We pull up as a group and we all smell the same? No, no, no

KENNEDY:You have to be one of a kind. [Both laugh] And then what about your night routine?

HORSEGIIRL:In the evenings I exfoliate, and I also—once again—always do an oil and foaming cleanse. And then I go into either using my retinol anti-aging cream, which I do four days out of seven. Or I just, again, go in with a really nice, strong ceramide Korean moisturizer. And sometimes, if I’m feeling really, really fancy, I will sleep with one of these collagen masks on, the ones that stay on your face and then dry up and become like a second skin. But I can move a lot when I sleep, so they don’t always stick.

KENNEDY:[Laughs] Yeah. I also move a lot in my sleep, so it’s so hard to put anything on my face, it just goes all over the place

HORSEGIIRL:It’s crazy. I don’t know how the girlies are doing it when they have all of the rollers in their hair and then they have the mask. I mean, I appreciate the commitment, but no

KENNEDY:[Both laugh] Have you ever seen the light masks?

HORSEGIIRL:Oh my god. But people don’t sleep with those, no? I think that’s a hazard. You can electrocute yourself in your sleep or something

KENNEDY:True! What are you enjoying about the beauty space right now?

HORSEGIIRL:I think it’s a bit of an ambivalent feeling. I love that we moved away from having to have this super crazy makeup routine. We’re so focused on skin health right now. Also I think more and more people understand that each skin is different, so you really have to try out a little bit and find what works for you. I think it’s nice that people are more free to choose whatever vibe they want to go down on. And it’s not just this one unified look. I also love that everyone finally clocked SPF as important. [Laughs] I think we will all look so much younger than any previous generation before.

KENNEDY:SPF is so important. Is there a beauty trend right now that you are sick of?

HORSEGIIRL: Definitely the unachievable glass skin trend. I think you can have very moisturized and healthy looking skin, but you don’t need to aim for glass skin per se. I think it’s chasing something that is very rarely achievable

KENNEDY:For sure, it’s so unrealistic. I want to switch gears a little bit. I’ve been absolutely loving NATURE IS HEALING. Could you tell me a little bit about the inspiration behind the theme of the album?

HORSEGIIRL:The inspo was obviously mother, Mother Earth, and us all being on this beautiful planet. I felt so much love and appreciation for Mother Nature that I really wanted to dedicate my first album to her. I was really returning to my countryside home, and it made me feel so grounded and grateful. That’s really what I poured into the music

KENNEDY:Is this connection to the earth something you’ve always felt or is it something that started when you were creating your album?

HORSEGIIRL:No, it’s something I always felt. Even when I was a little foal. I always loved looking at bugs, and worms, and just finding out about different plants. I think there’s so much wonder in the world and so much beauty. And everything is so intricately designed in such an incredible variety. And I never stop being in awe of the elements and seasons.

KENNEDY:I’m wondering what keeps you grounded?

HORSEGIIRL:Being in nature. I think escaping every now and then and not just being in a city. Not being in a completely concrete environment I think is very, very important to stay grounded. I really encourage people to not just go to a park in your city, but actually try and leave the city for a bit. It puts things into perspective and makes you realize that a lot of the daily worries we have aren’t as important when you put out your hands and touch some grass and walk barefoot.

KENNEDY:Touching grass is important! You also stated on Instagram that this is the first album that you felt proud about your work. Could you tell me a little bit more about that?

HORSEGIIRL:I think for any musician, the first album is a very important and special thing. Before that, I was always a little bit in the trap of single releases. Yes, I did some EPs, but it was always quick fire. I never had the time and consistency to work on one project and really pour all of my love into it, and potentially also do the odd little track that isn’t trying to be a club or pop banger and really just create a full body of work. That’s, in the end, why I think I feel the most proud of this album because it was also the hardest and longest to make. It’s a real luxury to take the time to work on music in detail.

KENNEDY:Amazing. What is the connection to you between hyperpop and partying and nature?

HORSEGIIRL:I find it interesting that I often get this hyperpop stamp. I don’t think I ever really made hyperpop. I think definitely on the album there’s more tracks that are leaning into the hyperpop world than ever before. But I actually always felt like I was more in the happy, hardcore Eurodance kind of world. I think that is also my upbringing, Sunshine Farms in Europe. It was very much directly tied to going out, to dancing, to moving. And there’s a euphoria in happy hardcore and Eurodance. It makes you want to gallop. I think that is, to me, the connection to nature as well. It makes you want to run around in a field and just let go of the fear of being perceived and looking silly, or whatever, because the music is so freeing and you can be silly.

KENNEDY:Thank you for the clarification because I find that intersection you create really interesting. Do you have some specific sweat-proof products that you like to use for the stage, especially in the summer?

HORSEGIIRL:Unfortunately, no. If you know any, let me know. I mean, of course it helps to wear things that are natural—organic fabrics that are breathable and lightweight. But they don’t always serve hot stage outfits.

KENNEDY:[Both laugh] Right. And sometimes sweating is the fun of the game. Just letting everything out of your body

HORSEGIIRL:Exactly! It’s a little workout.

KENNEDY:So what hair products do you use to keep your mane so good?

HORSEGIIRL:I really love MIZANI products. I always loved their leave-in conditioner. I really, really love the smell of the Roz shampoo. I like their bottles as well because they’re aluminum and you can reuse them. I always try to use a heat protector on my hair and my mane so she stays healthy. And the good old apple cider vinegar water trick to cleanse the roots every now-and-then, instead of a harsh shampoo, works for my mane.

KENNEDY:And what about for your brows, do you have specific products for that?

HORSEGIIRL:No, they’re all natural. I don’t really do much to them. I just brush them up.

KENNEDY:Blessed by the brow gods. What inspired the sound and production behind NATURE IS HEALING, is it strictly your connection to the earth?

HORSEGIIRL:No, I definitely had a real idea where I wanted to take it sonically. I guess in my mind, I conceptually already knew I wanted to have flutes in the album, and bring back an accordion—but not in the traditional Eastern Europe 2010 way. Maybe in a little bit more of an esoteric, spiritual way. It was very much sticking to a specific recipe for a lot of the tracks. I wanted them to embody euphoria and a little bit of melancholy. But I also wanted to give a nudge to all these different amazing ’90s spiritual genres. I really like the mixture of organic textures that are artificially made or real instruments that then get modified and turned into something more synthetic. I really like this play of it both happening at the same time. Where you can’t really tell anymore, “Is this a real water sound or is it a synthesized water sound?” It speaks so much, in a way, to our society as well because it’s so hard to know nowadays. What even is natural?

KENNEDY:You also recently announced on Instagram that you are “breaking the pattern and starting to hard post for a bit.” I’m curious what prompted that?

HORSEGIIRL:I think you just get into this rut once you are really doing this professionally where social media becomes this extra job. I mean, I have people who literally help me post because it takes so long. Going through all of these photos, and choosing which one, and blah, blah, blah. Then it just became almost too corporate. I used to really not overthink posting, and I would just repost memes and talk to my fans. I think that’s the best way you can still use and engage with social media to actually talk to your fans. So I was just like, “You know what? Maybe I need to stop overthinking and just, yeah, hard post.” It’s a hard post summer.

KENNEDY:It’s a hard post summer. I really do think the way you’re posting makes the audience feel more connected to you as an artist in general. I just really love how open and unserious you’re being

HORSEGIIRL:We all grew up with the internet being all of these different things, but mainly a huge the times, a very hard and difficult world. And that’s also one thing that I still love about social media.

KENNEDY:My Reels are ridiculous. We’re just about out of time, but the readers must know: How do you do your lashes?

HORSEGIIRL:I use a serum. And I really think it’s also genetics. It is what I was blessed with from my horse family side. You just have the long lashes, that’s what I say
