Our Fashion Writer’s Fall Wardrobe Essentials

It’s cliché, but it’s true: I call my style “classic with a twist.” I reach for trendproof silhouettes that have a touch of eccentricity, whether it’s a loud print (tiger stripes are a favorite), a striking color (lately, it’s pistachio green), or an unexpected fabric swap (I wear my leather Bermuda shorts far more than my cotton-twill pair). While I thrive in the summer as an August Leo, fall is when I can dress to my fullest potential as someone with playful and occasionally weirdo taste. In September and beyond, I’m not beholden to particular fabrics or shapes to minimize sweating and can experiment with layers and combinations as my heart sees fit.
As for the actual outfit-building: As much as I enjoy — and make a living on — seeing the trend cycle do its thing, it doesn’t play a role in how I get dressed. Instead, I prefer to invest in pieces that reflect my personality (vintage excels here) and style outfits based on my mood, inspirations, and the day’s logistics. For an October Wednesday working in the office, that might lead me to a satin J.Crew pencil skirt with a baby-pink H&M button-down (which is no longer available, but I found a similar option at Almina Concept) and Emme Parsons kitten heels. If I’ve rewatched my favorite Alfred Hitchcock movie in honor of spooky season, that could easily inspire me to reach for an LBD and ’50s-inspired car coat for a Saturday dinner.
