Cetaphil turns the post-face-wash ‘stretch’ into a skincare conversation
That tight, stretchy feeling after washing your face has long been treated as proof that the cleanser has done its job. Cetaphil is challenging that assumption with its campaign, ‘The Stretch’, which puts a familiar post-wash sensation under the skincare microscope
The campaign is built around a simple consumer insight: the squeaky-clean, “khicha-khicha” feeling many people associate with cleanliness can actually signal lost hydration and disruption to the skin barrier. Cetaphil’s communication aims to shift the conversation from skin feeling “squeaky clean” to skin being clean without feeling stripped
For a category where the immediate sensation after cleansing can often influence whether a product is perceived as effective, the idea has given consumers a new way to think about what happens after they rinse their face. Cetaphil says the conversation around post-wash tightness and skin barrier health has since gained wider traction across the skincare category
At the centre of the campaign is Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, which uses the brand’s TLC Action, or Target, Lock, Connect approach. The formulation combines Niacinamide, Panthenol and Glycerin, with the brand stating that it is designed to cleanse while maintaining hydration and supporting the skin barrier from the first wash
Viju Nair, Business Unit Director, Consumer & E-commerce, Galderma India, said, “‘The Stretch’ started with a very simple observation: millions of people experience this sensation after washing their face, but very few stop to ask what it actually means. We wanted to challenge the idea that tightness equals clean skin and bring the conversation back to what science tells us about hydration and the skin barrier. What has been interesting is seeing the insight travel beyond the campaign and become part of the larger conversation around gentle cleansing.”
Cetaphil, which has been around for more than 79 years, says the campaign builds on its wider focus on science-backed skincare and dermatological expertise. The brand’s formulations have been supported by more than 1,100 clinical studies and tests involving over 49,000 subjects
The campaign also ties into Cetaphil’s positioning as India’s No.1 Dermatologist Recommended Brand, supported by more than 1 crore dermatologist prescriptions over the past 15 years, according to the brand
With ‘The Stretch’, Cetaphil is essentially asking consumers to reconsider a skincare habit that has become almost automatic: if your face feels tight after cleansing, does that really mean it is clean, or is your cleanser taking something away in the process?
