New Mexico tax-free weekend starts July 31

Tax-free weekend in New Mexico begins at midnight Friday, July 31, 2026 and will end at midnight Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026
The annual event from the state “allows for a deduction for the collection of gross receipts tax on sales of qualifying items so you can buy the items tax free. Because many merchants also absorb the tax on several non-qualifying items, you are the beneficiary all around,”
The qualifying items include clothing and shoes under $100 per item, school supplies under $30 per item, computers under $1,000 and computer hardware under $500. Excluded items include accessories, jewelry, headphones, video games, cameras, etc. For a full list of exclusions visit NMOne
If you need to exchange an item bought during tax-free weekend after the date for an item the same price, the item will still be tax-free
If an item is both ordered and paid for online during the tax-free weekend and it’s billed to a New Mexico address and if an item is put on layaway, it is eligible for waived taxes only if final payment and delivery is made during tax-free weekend

Retailers are not required to participate in the tax holiday. Businesses who choose not to participate must pay tax on otherwise eligible sales and may recover their tax costs from customers
