Interview – August 12, 2026

REIKO TAKIGUCHI | PRESIDENT OF ARSOA KEIO GROUP

Arsoa Keio Group is a Japanese beauty and wellness company based in Hokuto, Yamanashi Prefecture, with a philosophy centered on harmony between people and nature. Through its ARSOA skincare brand, R&D center, Saku Factory and Nature Organic Farm, the company connects cosmetics, health care, food and agriculture through research into water, minerals, plants and fermentation. Its approach reflects a belief that healthy skin begins with the body’s natural functions and the environment that supports them.

Over the years, J Beauty has faced strong competition from long established Western brands, and more recently from the rapid rise of Korean beauty, supported by powerful marketing and the global popularity of Korean culture. At the same time, Japanese culture and craftsmanship are gaining renewed international attention. Within this evolving and competitive landscape, how do you see the current positioning and identity of Japanese cosmetics and J Beauty today?

When we look at the beauty industry as a whole, I believe there are two major directions that are becoming increasingly clear. One is an approach that relies on scientific advancement and technological innovation to create beauty. The other is a more natural approach that considers not only the surface of the skin but also the overall condition of the mind, body, and skin together

In other words, there is a perspective that focuses on improving appearance by adding something externally, and another that seeks to enhance the natural abilities that already exist within us. Our company has consistently followed the latter approach for the past fifty four years. Rather than focusing on externally imposed solutions, we have continued to prioritize improving health from within and supporting the skin’s inherent strength.

In recent years, Japanese beauty has regained attention globally, and I feel that its identity is becoming clearer. The idea of providing high quality products in a minimal and refined way, based on the concept that less can offer more richness, is increasingly being recognized. This has allowed J Beauty to strengthen its presence even within a highly competitive global environment

You spoke about the idea of enhancing beauty from within, which contrasts with many global beauty narratives that emphasize visible and immediate external results. For readers who may be more familiar with performance driven skincare, could you explain why this concept of inner beauty is so central to your philosophy, and how it connects to everyday experiences of skin and health?

The most important point is that the skin is not separate from the body. It is part of the body, and therefore the condition of the body directly influences the condition of the skin. This is something many people have experienced in their daily lives

For example, when someone experiences constipation, they may notice breakouts such as acne. When the body is not feeling well, the complexion can become dull or lose its natural vitality. These are clear and familiar examples of how physical health is reflected in the skin

In addition to physical health, the mental and emotional state also plays a significant role. For instance, when a person is in love, they often feel uplifted and motivated to look more beautiful. This emotional state activates hormones, and as a result, the skin can appear more radiant and lively. These are not abstract ideas, but real experiences that many people, especially women, can easily relate to.

Because of this, we believe that beauty is not something isolated on the surface. It is the result of the connection between the mind, body, and skin. Our products are designed to support the skin in drawing out its own natural ability to become beautiful. Rather than forcing change from the outside, we aim to activate what is already present within each individual

Around the world, consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of ingredients, sustainability, and the origins of the products they use. Your company is particularly unique in that your philosophy extends beyond skincare into agriculture and environmental practices. Could you explain how your approach to farming, health, and product development are interconnected, and how this reflects a broader view of sustainability?

Our approach is based on the idea of creating a complete cycle, where everything is connected and continuously flows. This applies not only to our products but also to how we think about society and production as a whole

For example, we cultivate vegetables without using pesticides. These vegetables are then used to produce enzyme based drinks that contain plant fibers and other beneficial natural components, including herbs. After the production process, the remaining plant fibers are not discarded. Instead, they are returned to the soil

When these fibers are returned to the earth, they activate the microorganisms in the soil, enriching it and making it more fertile. Through this process, we have even discovered new beneficial bacteria, such as a unique type of lactic acid bacteria that has strong immune supporting properties and may also contribute to other aspects of health

This cycle allows us to experience firsthand how nature continuously regenerates itself. In addition, at our skincare factory, we place great importance on water. The area where our factory is located has naturally clean water, and we believe it is our responsibility to preserve that environment

We have implemented a zero emission approach, ensuring that no harmful waste is released, and we maintain one hundred percent recycling. Rather than simply speaking about sustainability in conceptual terms, we have consistently practiced it, and through that practice we have come to deeply understand how it influences both human health and the beauty of the skin

The circular agricultural system you described is particularly compelling at a time when regenerative practices and waste reduction are becoming global priorities. Could you describe this cycle in more detail and explain how materials that might traditionally be considered waste are instead reintegrated into a living system?

After extracting nutrients from vegetables, the remaining material is fermented again. This fermented material is rich in microorganisms and nutrients, and during the fermentation process, it generates heat, sometimes reaching around seventy degrees Celsius

This material is then returned to the fields, where it stimulates the activity of microorganisms already present in the soil. As a result, the soil becomes richer and more fertile. From this revitalized soil, new vegetables are grown, and the cycle continues

In this system, nothing is wasted. Everything is returned to the earth and contributes to the next stage of growth. It is a natural and continuous process of regeneration

We also believe it is important to share this knowledge. Students from local schools visit to learn about this cycle, so that they can understand how nature works and why it is important to maintain this balance

Your work also extends into developing cosmetic ingredients derived directly from this natural environment. In particular, you mentioned unique botanical extracts such as those derived from flowers grown on your farm. Could you explain how these natural elements are incorporated into product development and what makes them significant?

We have developed techniques to extract ingredients from plants that are often considered difficult to cultivate without chemical assistance. For example, we have succeeded in obtaining extracts from blue roses grown without pesticides

In addition, we have created a unique extract from the nectar of flowers that bloom on our farm. By carefully collecting and studying this nectar over time, we were able to develop an ingredient that helps activate the skin

These natural extracts are known to have strong antioxidant properties and contribute to refreshing and revitalizing skin cells. What is important is that these ingredients are not isolated artificially, but are derived from processes that are part of the natural cycle of the earth. This gives them a deeper connection to our overall philosophy

Research and development appears to be deeply integrated into your philosophy, particularly with your focus on natural relaboratory based innovation, your team seems to engage directly with nature. Could you explain your current research priorities?

One of our main areas of focus is the role of water. Since most cosmetic products are largely composed of water, we believe that the quality and characteristics of that water are extremely important

While many companies use alcohol or purified water, we have developed a unique type of water that is highly compatible with the skin. This water allows for better absorption and enhances the effectiveness of other ingredients

We also use natural hot spring water of moisturizing components, and through long term research, we have been able to use it in its pure form within our products

Additionally, we have developed a method of emulsification that does not rely on conventional surfactants. This allows us to create products that are gentler on the skin while still maintaining effectiveness

Our researchers do not limit themselves to the laboratory. They actively go into natural environments such as fields and forests to observe, explore, and discover new possibilities. This connection with nature is a fundamental part of how we approach innovation

Your business model is also distinctive, particularly your reliance on a large network of beauty consultants who engage directly with customers. In an era increasingly dominated by digital platforms and large scale marketing, your approach emphasizes personal interaction and experience. How does this direct relationship with customers influence your brand and product development?

Our approach is based on genuine experience. Our consultants first use the products themselves and then recommend them based on their own positive results

This creates a natural flow of communication, where people become interested through real conversations rather than through aggressive sales methods. For example, someone may simply notice that another person’s skin looks beautiful and ask what they are using

At the same time, our consultants are highly knowledgeable. They study skin physiology, learn about ingredients, and use tools to analyze skin conditions. They also explore the relationship between the body and the skin

Because of this combination of personal experience and knowledge, they are able to provide meaningful advice to customers. The feedback they gather also plays an important role in improving and developing our products

When considering your product range, particularly your newer offerings, who do you see as your core audience, and what specific needs are you aiming to address in the market?

Our products are especially suitable for individuals with sensitive or delicate skin. Many customers tell us that they experienced irritation or discomfort with other products, but were able to use ours comfortably

They also notice that their skin becomes more stable and gradually improves. Our goal is not only to provide effective products, but also to build trust as a company. We hope that customers will feel confident in what we offer and continue to support us over time

As you look toward international expansion, particularly across Asia, different markets bring different consumer expectations, climates, and cultural approaches to skincare. How are you approaching overseas growth, and how do you plan to adapt your philosophy and products to different regions?

We are focusing primarily on Asian markets where skin types are similar to those in Japan. At the same time, our philosophy places great importance on cleansing, which requires access to water, so this is also a factor when considering expansion

Countries such as Vietnam and Thailand are of particular interest. However, we understand that products that are successful in Japan may not always work in exactly the same way in other markets

We already have customers using our products in these regions, so we plan to listen carefully to their feedback and adapt where necessary. Our approach is to grow gradually while maintaining our core philosophy

Finally, returning to the environment we are in today, the building itself is highly distinctive and reflects a strong connection to nature and creativity rather than purely functional design. In a time when many workplaces prioritize efficiency above all else, what was the intention behind creating this space, and how does it influence your team and your work?

We moved to this location in nineteen ninety eight with the intention of putting our philosophy of harmony with nature into practice in a more meaningful way

This space was designed not only as a functional workplace, but as an environment that reflects our values. It encourages our researchers and employees to stay connected to nature, rather than being confined to a purely artificial setting

For example, our research team does not remain only in the laboratory. They go into the fields and forests to observe and find inspiration. This environment supports that way of thinking and working

By being in a place that embodies our philosophy, it becomes easier for everyone in the company to stay aligned with our purpose and continue developing products that reflect our beliefs
