Back to School: Saving tips while shopping for new school supplies

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) –Back to school shopping can feel like a test trying to find the best prices
“I try to find a bargain, but they like more expensive,” says Yvonee Lopez. “But if I can find a good deal, I will.”
The National Retail Federation estimates the average K-12 shopper will spend more than $863. That’s up slightly from $858 last year, and up more than $160 from 2019
Experts say you shouldn’t feel pressured to buy everything your student needs for the entire school year all at once
“I think that’s really where a lot of families get caught up in that feeling,” says Stephanie Carls with RetailMeNot
Carls suggests breaking down your shopping list to identify which items you need to buy now and which ones can wait
“You have the buy now, which is those different things you need to have ready for the first morning, so that’s the backpack, shoes that fit, the supply list,” she said
Carls adds where you shop can make a big difference
“You have retailers that are really coming through with some great lower prices this year,” Carls said. “You have Walmart, you have Target that are doing that.”
You can check prices online first or use apps like Flipp to compare costs in advance so you don’t waste gas money driving all around town
